What is the best Antivirus/Malware/Root Kit application to use that will protect my Windows system but won’t bring my system to a crawl?
This is something I have been dealing with for decades now. There is no correct answer, this is my opinion and it works for me.
A long, long, long time ago I loved McAffee and Norton. Back in the day they were the best. My how times have changed. While I haven’t tried these products in a while, they were crippling the desktop systems I was maintain at the time. I move to Zone Alarm for a while and that worked for a few years then the same problem. Then on to AVG witch I still think is a very good product today. I still wasn’t 100% happy with the performance, so after a lot of googling and testing I moved to Avast.
For the past 10 years I have been very happy with it. I have had very few systems compromised in that time and it never appeared to slow systems down very much except during boot time. Them I ran into a lot of problems with Windows 10 slowing to a crawl and becoming unusable. (see my last blog post) for reasons why. I suspected Avast was contributing to the problem
For that reason, I started using BitDefender. I experimented with other Antivirus products and found that BitDefender uses a smaller footprint than most. So, when I started using on client’s systems the complaints went down. That told me I was on the right track.
I still personally prefer and use to Avast because of all the options you have, like boot time scan, turning core shields on and off etc. For my clients that are not very technical I use BitDefender because of its ease of use. If a client does get a virus, I am going to boot their system up with Linux to scan it anyway. I even would do that to a system with Avast on it.
In summary I would recommend BitDefender at this time. Granted if you read this post you can see that things can change rapidly with Windows and antivirus updates. I will keep you posted on my thoughts on this again at the end of the year.
